Going the Distance (Module 4)

In this four-module workshop, we’ll cover the basics of designing and teaching a remote course. We’ll talk about the key differences with face-to-face teaching, show how to set up your course in Blackboard, discuss the essential practices of engaging and effective remote teaching, and make sure you get a good grasp of the tools that will help you along the way.
Going the Distance consists of four modules which break down as follows, according to the dates below:
Module 1: Planning Your Remote Course (December 7)
Topics: dealing with the differences between face-to-face and remote teaching; learning in remote courses; learning outcomes and learning activities for remote courses; organizing a course in Blackboard
Module 2: Engaging Students in a Remote Course (December 8)
Topics: creating connections between instructors and students; creating connections between students and the course material; developing an instructor’s presence in a remote course; lecturing (and its alternatives)
Module 3: Interacting with Students in a Remote Course (December 14)
Topics: setting expectations for participation; managing large classes; leading seminar-style discussions; managing groups and group work
Module 4: Assessing Students’ Work in a Remote Course (December 15)
Topics: assessing students’ work, from quizzes to presentations to exams
